Sunflowers in the Window

Sunflowers in the Window
Seasonal flowers also abound at the Farmer's Market. I found this golden bunch of sunflowers perched dramatically in a window awaiting the return of their owner. In the autumn, dried sunflower heads will be for sale, yielding tasty seed for hungry birds.

Bread Baskets

Bread Baskets

Crusty, fresh bread just pulled from the oven, tucked into a brown paper bag. I can imagine breaking the rough brown exterior open with my hands and drizzling a stream of golden green olive oil over the soft yeasty hunk of heaven sent goodness. Are you salivating yet? What is a trip to the Farmer's Market without a fresh loaf of bread?

Chile Harvest

Chile Harvest

Although it's too early in the season for chiles, this is the most colorful time at the Santa Fe Farmer's Market. Bushels of red, green and yellow chiles are a feast for the eye starting in September. And the aroma of roasting chiles is true New Mexican ambiance! Every year I take home bags of chiles to store in the freezer, waiting to be made into a tasty green chile stew or warm posole on some future cold winter's day. Ah yes, chile harvest is magnificent!

Sometimes you just stumble upon beautiful bunches of carrots stacked next to gorgeous radicchio! The photo was all there waiting for me to capture it with my camera.

Cherry Baskets

Cherry Baskets

Finally ... the spring Farmer's Market has arrived! Delicate greens, rosy red radishes and just-picked asparagus. Yummmmm. My favorite time of the year is when I can visit the Santa Fe Farmer's Market weekly for healthy produce, just-baked bread and farm-fresh eggs. This week I'll feature photos from our local market located at the Santa Fe Railyard.

Indian Paintbrush

Indian Paintbrush
I  usually take a morning walk when the weather cooperates. Today it was obvious that spring wildflowers were finally making their presence known. Living at an altitude of 7,000 feet with a high desert climate, makes for an unusual growing season. The nights are cool, blustering winds tear at fragile plants and snow can fall into May. This weekend a few showers graced our landscape and the dormant wildflowers took notice. Today I spotted yuccas in bloom, blue cosmos bobbing their delicate heads, and tiny purple flox peaking out from desert vegetation. I also saw my first Indian Paintbrush. This scarlet flower likes high, rocky areas, grows low to the ground and doesn't like being transplanted from its native habitat. The image above was photographed a few years ago when I propped my camera on the ground and aimed the lens up at a few blooms, trying to grab the sky as my background.
