| Indian Paintbrush |
I usually take a morning walk when the weather cooperates. Today it was obvious that spring wildflowers were finally making their presence known. Living at an altitude of 7,000 feet with a high desert climate, makes for an unusual growing season. The nights are cool, blustering winds tear at fragile plants and snow can fall into May. This weekend a few showers graced our landscape and the dormant wildflowers took notice. Today I spotted yuccas in bloom, blue cosmos bobbing their delicate heads, and tiny purple flox peaking out from desert vegetation. I also saw my first Indian Paintbrush. This scarlet flower likes high, rocky areas, grows low to the ground and doesn't like being transplanted from its native habitat. The image above was photographed a few years ago when I propped my camera on the ground and aimed the lens up at a few blooms, trying to grab the sky as my background.
